QINGDAO, China, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Juanma Lillo has resigned as head coach of Qingdao Huanghai FC, the Chinese Super League (CSL) side announced on Friday.

The Spaniard took charge of Qingdao Huanghai midway through last season and helped the team win promotion to the top flight from China League One.

A club statement said that with Lillo currently in Spain and unable to return to China due to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, he asked the club to terminate his contract ahead of schedule.

Media reports had suggested that Lillo would be appointed assistant coach at English Premier League side Manchester City, after previous incumbent Mikel Arteta left the club in December to take over as head coach at Arsenal.
