Bad weather halts mountain rescue mission

Spain News.Net
Sunday 20th July, 2008

Extreme weather has delayed an operation to rescue two Italian mountaineers.

The men have been stranded on one of the highest peaks in the Himalayas, Nanga Parbat.

The climbers have been stranded about a kilometre from the top of Nanga Parbat, also known as Killer Mountain, after a colleague fell into a crevice and died earlier this week.

A helicopter-borne rescue team has located the climbers and dropped equipment, food and a satellite telephone.

The climbers have not used the phone so-far and visual contact with the mountaineers has been lost.

Nanga Parbat, at 8125 metres, is the ninth highest mountain in the world and is regarded as technically one of the most difficult.

The peak was first conquered in 1953 after 31 people had died in the attempt.
